How are insulation boards installed in wall applications?

Insulated plasterboard can be installed using the dot and dab method or by mechanically fixing the boards onto timber battens.
Please note this is a guide only. Always consult a building professional before insulation your domestic or non-domestic building. Installing the incorrect insulation materials or using an incorrect installation method can be a timely and costly mistake.

Dot and Dab method– Cut the boards to size making sure they are cut 15mm shorter than the top to bottom length of the wall and they are cut to fit around outlets and fixings. Mix and apply the required adhesive around the room to line with the board’s perimeter and centres. Take into consideration uneven walls and put less or more adhesive where required. Press the boards onto wall and pat into place using your hands to avoid damaging the boards. Use a spirit level to check the boards are even.

Mechanically Fixing method – Fix timber battens round the ceiling and floor level of the walls and horizontally around the room at 600mm centres. Be sure to cut around all openings and fixings such as windows and plug sockets. Fix the boards onto the battens making sure screws go through the boards and only halfway into the battens. Join the boards at the centre of the battens.

What is thermal conductivity and how does it work?

Thermal conductivity is the rate that heat is transferred by conduction through a particular section of a material. For example, if a material has a high level of thermal conductivity, that piece of materials has a good ability to receive energy and use it to conduct more energy. The energy is than spread through the material.

When the material has than conducted energy (heat) the lining of the material is designed to reflect the energy back into the building and prevent heat escaping. This is particularly seen in lofts where heat rises within a building and is reflected into the space. See for yourself the next time you use your loft space. Is it hot or cold?

How do you cut insulated plasterboard?

Protect gear such as gloves, masks, and goggles should be worn when cutting insulated plasterboards to prevent irritation caused by the material fibres.

The best and easiest way to cut insulated plasterboard is to measure and mark the board to size and then cut using a fine-toother saw. The boards can also be scored on insulation side, cutting through to the paper back of the plasterboard with a sharp knife, snapped over a hard edge and scored the other side.
