Celotex PIR Board – XR4000

The Celotex XR4000 insulation boards can be installed in multiple applications. They are popular due to their thickness as well as the ease to cut and install. These boards even boast excellent thermal performance. Similar to the other Celotex PIR boards, the XR4000 has a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/m.K.
The XR4000 achieves an A rating when compared on the BRE Green Guide. It also has certification from BBA. Celotex is an innovative company, who are constantly improving their products. The XR4000 has been specifically designed to conform with building standards of the future.

What are Celotex XR4000 boards made from?

Celotex XR4000 PIR boards are made from PIR (rigid polyisocyanurate). PIR is thermoset plastic, which is formed into a foam. In addition to this, a layer of aluminium foil is glued to the board. This low emissivity foil facing helps to improve the insulation properties of the XR4000. The finished product is cut up into different thicknesses.

XR4000 is popular as it can be cut and installed easily. For guidance on installing XR4000 insulation board – read our Celotex PIR Board Installation Guide.

Celotex XR4000 Applications

The XR4000 is a thicker board compared to its counterparts. It is worth noting that this board should not be used in external walls of buildings that are 18 metres or taller in height in England & Wales or 11 metres or taller in Scotland. This is due to recent changes in building regulations that have meant that only non-combustible or very limited combustible materials can be used in a building that tall. It can be considered for floor, wall and roof applications. A list of applications for the XR4000 can be found below:

  • Ground Floor – Concrete Slab
  • Ground Floor – Suspended Timber Joist
  • Ground Floor – Beam and Block
  • Upgrading Existing Concrete Slab Floor
  • External Wall – Timber Frame Sheathing
  • External Wall – Between Timber Frame Studs
  • Pitched Roof – Over Timber Rafters
  • Pitched Roof – Sarking
  • Pitched Roof – Between Timber Rafters

What is the difference between TB4000, GA4000, and XR4000?

Celotex PIR insulation boards are all 2400mm by 1200mm with a thermal conductivity of 0.022W/mK. The boards range from thickness between 25mm and 200mm. The PIR boards thicknesses are split into three different ranges – TB4000, GA4000 and XR4000
To sum up the only difference between each range is the product thickness.

How do you cut and install XR4000 boards?

XR4000 Insulation PIR boards can be cut by first measuring and marking the boards to size and cutting with a fine-toothed saw. They can also be cut by scoring one side of the board with a sharp blade, snapping the board over a hard edge, and scoring the other side of the board.
Protective gear such as gloves, masks, and goggles should be worn when cutting PIR boards to prevent irritation caused by the material fibres.
Please note this is a guide only. Always consult a building professional before insulation your domestic or non-domestic building. Installing the incorrect insulation materials or using an incorrect installation method can be a timely and costly mistake.
Pitched roof applications – Cut the boards to size if necessary. Measure the spaces between each rafter to ensure each board fit each individual space as the cavity sizes may differ. Push the insulation boards to the back of each cavity. The thickness of the board should be consistent with the depth of the rafter. Ensure two boards joint together are tightly butted and foil tape is used to avoid thermal bridging. Once the pitched roof has been filled with insulation, another layer of insulation can be fixed horizontally over the rafters using necessary fixings.
If you have plans to convert the space into a room-in-the-roof, plasterboards can be applied over the insulation and decorated at a later date. The plasterboards can also protect and help the insulation boards to maintain an excellent thermal quality for longer periods.
