In modern construction, safety and reliability is key when it comes to building works, particularly when it comes to fire prevention. An essential material when it comes to protection is fire-rated plasterboards. The 12.5mm Fire Rated Plasterboards have an aerated gypsum core with glass fibre additives bonded between strong high-quality paper facings with tapered edges (TE) along each side of the board. Fibreglass is flexible, non-flammable, resistant to chemical and biological effects and has a relatively low density. The properties of fibreglass make it the perfect additive for fire-proofing products such as plasterboards.

Here at Insulation Board, we have a range of tapered edge plasterboard products available including standard plasterboards, Moisture-resistant plasterboards, Soundproof Plasterboards, and Vapour Panels. Check out the full range on our plasterboard page.

12.5mm Fire Board Application Types

The 12.5mm fire rated plasterboards can be installed within timber and steel frame applications within the walls and ceiling and require mechanical fixings such as drywall screws. Fire resistant plasterboard can be applied to walls, partitions, and ceilings within residential and commercial buildings including garages and work facilities.

The effectiveness of the fire rated boards is measured by the amount of time that it can withstand high temperatures before burning. Our fire boards will provide at least 30 minutes of fire protection. The time frame of fire protection will depend on the application method and whether other fire procedures have been put in place such as steel framing systems instead of timber and fire-resistant insulation materials such as glass fibre.

At Insulation Board we advise that you seek professional advice due to rules and regulations in the UK that are frequently changed and updated. Be sure to consult a building professional or contractor prior to using or installing fire boards.

When it comes to UK building regulations for using fire plasterboards, there are key points to follow including ensuring the chosen board aligns with necessary resistance for the walls, ceilings, or floors, depending on building type. Fire plasterboards are essential in multi-occupancy residential or commercial buildings or areas such as fire escape routes. Plasterboards must meet British compliance standards and must be used in accordance with manufacturers guidelines. Fire safety regulation can be found on the Gov website.

Why Would You Use 12.5mm Fire Boards Over 15mm Fire Boards?

12.5mm fire panels are a great choice for walls and ceilings due to their light weight. The thinner boards are lights and in turn easier to handle and install particularly for ceiling where the board will need to be lifted higher. Thicker boards can be trickier to install and skim. The thin nature of the 12.5mm board will be simple to seal and skim as there is less of a slant in the tapered edge. Unless there are specific requirements for a thicker board, the 12.5mm fire board is a standard size than is popular amongst builders.
